Practicum Training Program Overview:

For Master’s Degree Students in the final year of an accredited program

Applications for the September-April term opens in January of the same year.

The Practicum Training Program (PTP) is geared towards students with limited or no previous clinical experience. It includes a structured training component, in addition to direct clinical contact, associated indirect tasks, and clinical supervision. Interns are placed in various agency programs which offer Intake Assessments of Need, Single Sessions, Individual, Couple, Family and Group Therapy addressing a wide range of clinical issues. Application Deadline: February 28th of each year.

Important Dates: The PTP Year is from September to April.

Placement Locations: Placements will be based out of the Brampton location but interns may need to travel to the Mississauga location based on client needs.

Eligibility: Interns must be graduate students who are completing a degree in social work, psychotherapy, marriage and family therapy, psychology, or another related field. Internationally trained professionals who are eligible to be registered to practice in Canada may also apply. Applicants must have completed courses in therapy or counselling skills, couple and family therapy, human development, trauma, violence, professional ethics, diversity, inclusion and some of the major theories and approaches to therapy, including evidence-based models.

Required Number of Hours: Interns are expected to commit to a minimum of 20  hours a week. These hours will be Tuesday through Friday as appropriate. Interns can request additional hours to accumulate more direct client contact hours, co-facilitate a group, and participate in Agency activities.
  
Intern Activities: Intern activities consist of conducting Intake Assessment of Needs, Connect Clinic, Single Sessions, Individual, Couple and Family Therapy sessions and associated indirect work.  Individual supervision (1 hour/week), group supervision (1-2 hours/month), consultation as needed, and training (1 module/month). Students are also encouraged to co-facilitate at least one group. Group activities may include pre-screening, preparation and debrief, co-facilitation, as well as supervision with the group leaders.

  2. Selected applicants will be contacted for a scheduled interview in March or April. 
  3. Successful applicants will be notified no later than April.
